Welcome to my food blog!
I didn’t start cooking until I was 22 and arrived in New Orleans for law school, fresh out of college. Until then, I always had a meal plan (both of the mom and college variety). At first, I was pretty tentative, but I’ve grown much more adventurous. It all really started when I bought a really expensive crummy pie and thought that I could do better. And eventually, I did!
When I lived in New Orleans, I cooked almost every day and bought all my groceries from Wholefoods (in my defense, there is a dearth of grocery stores in NOLA, which is surprising for such a foodie city). I cooked a ton of French style food with cream sauces and almost everything I made was from epicurious. Ahhh, the good old days. If it said milk, I substituted heavy cream. My arteries are no longer on speaking terms with me.
Now, I live in the Northeast again and my focus has changed. I’m trying to save money and cook less, so many of the recipes on this blog are wallet friendly and serve many. We eat tons of leftovers these days, so I cook about three or four nights a week. Now that I’m back up here, I’ve ditched Wholefoods (well, mostly), and I’m loving Fairway, Trader Joe’s, and Fairway. Yes, that was Fairway twice. It is that good. I am also trying to be more healthy. I am not a vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination, but I’m trying to expand my veggie consumption (hello squash and leeks!).
I cook mainly for myself and my boyfriend, the Resident Frenchman. He is an excellent cook himself, so he is a tough critic. I cook mostly at his place, which suffers from a critical lack of counter space and decent lighting. I’d measure the square feet of the counters, but that would be depressing.
On this blog you will find a lot of solid good food – sort of comfort food with flair. I try to avoid pricey ingredients these days but I still have a weakness for cream. And also shallots, creme fraiche and pecans. Most of the recipes posted here were made at least once and many of the early postings are my true blue recipes that I make over and over again.
I started this blog to share my love of food and recipes, but also to improve my writing skills. I went to law school, so now I write in an overly stiff and formal legal-ese. It is awful! So bear with me as I (hopefully) get my writing skills back.
Enjoy!
